Soimos
At the northern bank of the river Mures, lies a little village, called Soimos. It is surrounded bij the green Zahrand mountains. Here you can find another magnificent attraction of Lipova county:
The fortress of the Hawk
High above the river Mures on a cliff lies the Fortress of the Hawk; in Romanian it is called "Cetatea Soimos", because "soim" means "hawk".
The fortress was already mentioned in the year 1278. During its history it has been possessed by famous kingdoms, like the Hohenzollern kings, because there was no stronger and strategic rampart in the wide vicinity. The Turkish invaders in the roaring middle ages have never conquered it; the fortress maintained his unassailable position high above the river.
Past Glory
Nowadays the proud fortress has become a ruin, but dwelling between the crumbly walls one can still imagine the heroic past.
Every weekend many local tourists climb up to the fortress, for playtime, for a picknick, for the beautiful overviews, for a dangerous climbing on the walls. So, when you are looking for the cache at the weekend, beware of nosy parkers! And remind that the fortress is lizard's playground!
