Geocache Description:

Near to Culloden Battlefield, this cache will be maintained locally by strathviews, to whom messages should be relayed.

On 16 April 1746, 4,000 starving, tired and poorly equipped supporters of Prince Charles Stuart, some in their teens, others in their 50s, faced a superior 9,000-strong army of his cousin, William, Duke of Cumberland, on a bleak moor outside Inverness.

This was the last battle fought on British mainland soil and was not, as many think, between English and Scots, but between the British government and the Jacobite rebels: more Scots actually fought for the government than fought for the 'romantic' Stuart cause. Clansman fought clansman, brother fought brother. It took only 45 minutes for Cumberland’s veterans to overcome the rebels.

After Culloden, the government repressed Highland society: tartan and bagpipes were banned and the Gaelic language was frowned upon. Large tracts of confiscated land were given to government supporters and at strategic points, strong stone forts such as Fort George were built to further control the population.

In the middle of the battlefield stands a cairn created in 1881. It is 20 feet high by 18 feet in diameter and is built of rough stones mixed with soil.
