Camp Sagawau's primary attraction is a dolomite limestone canyon estimated to be 100,000 years old. The only exposed canyon of its kind in Cook County.
The canyon was formed by sand laid down in a huge shallow inland sea more than 425 million years ago and later brought to the surface.
Erosion of water in the stream gradually and slowly created the canyon you see today exposing the limestone walls.
Please note that this is an Illinois Registered Reserve and free hiking is not allowed.
Instructions:
Pull in the gate off of Rt 83 and park in the lot.

The Camp Sagawau Environmental Education Center is open for canyon tours from April thru July and in October.
Canyon Tour Days for 2013:
April - Saturdays at 1:00 pm
May - Sundays at 1:00 pm
June - Saturdays at 1:00 pm
July - Sundays at 1:00 pm
August - Saturdays at 1:00 pm
September - Sundays at 1:00 pm
October - Saturdays at 1:00 pm
November - Sundays at 1:00 pm
Time: 1:00 pm (please arrive 10 minutes to a half hour ahead of time).
Cost: Free
Footware: Please wear waterproof boots as the tour will take you into the canyon and into the shallow stream
For Verification: Measure the depth of the canyon (take a picture of a person of known height and then count how many 'persons' deep the canyon is) and divide by the age of the canyon (ask the tour guide) to see how slowly the canyon is being created.

Special Group Tours: If you can get a group of 10 to 15 people together call (630) 257-2045 and they can schedule a special tour almost anytime. School and Scout groups welcome.
