For our new cache we choose a very interesting and nice place, which is easy to be reached in one day trip from Sofia.
Zemen Gorge is where Struma river runs between Zemenska and Konyavska mountains. It is 22km long defile with really incredible rock formations in all it's length.
The target is the hill facing the wonderful 50 meters high "Skakavica waterfall". Honestly this is not the perfect view location to the waterfall (you can go just under it's drops), but is easiest to be gain.
The way to reach the location is :
a) get to Zemen by a car, left it and take a walk along the railroad till the abandoned "Polska Skakavitca" waystation. This is a nice 10 kilometers (one way)walk across the Zemen gorge, which will completely amaze you with all these sticked up rocks located aroud.
Please note:
1. take care for passing trains - print the trains schedule from the Bulgarian railway company website ( (visit link) ) and be carefull - some of them are pretty quiet.
2. don't forget to take a flashlight in your backpack - should need it in the tunnels. Calculate the time from "Zemen" or "Rajdavica" stations to your location and do not enter the tunnel if the train is under way to you. The longest tunnel is #4.
b) get to Zemen by a car, park it in the center and take a train to "Polska Skakavitca" waystation. ( That's one really boring approach to geocaching by me ;))
In order to go back to the starting point we advise you to take a train.
