Geocache Description:

A short, steep offset cache in the Clifton area, exploring one of Bristol's lesser known Victorian treasures.

The cache coordinates take you to the middle of an area where there is normally some free parking available (Clifton is not known for its plentiful parking spaces). From here, you need to find the entrance to a disused railway station nearby, and answer the following questions:

  • How many gold-coloured spikes are there on the top of each folding gate across the entrance? = A
  • How many steps are there between the pavement and the platform where the stairway turns right (not counting the pavement or the platform)? = B
  • One of the ornamental fenceposts has a golden ball on top. How many golden balls does that post have altogether? = C

The final cache is at N51 27.(C-A)(B/2)(B+2) W2 37.B0(A+1). It is a medium-size camoflaged tupperware box. The cache can be reached on wheels if adventurous (I set the cache by bike), but check your brakes before attempting, be particularly careful if the weather has made the path slippery, and be warned that a great deal of energy will be required for the return journey! Not recommended for wheelchair users unless exceptionally adventurous (Handicache rating H21511).

If you continue beyond the cache, you can also find the railway's second station (turn left at the bottom of the steep steps).

On a sunny day, it's worth stopping off at the Avon Gorge Hotel for a refreshing drink, and maybe a bite to eat. Their prices are a bit steep, but the view from the terrace is great.
