Geocache Description:


I hope the name of this cache will throw you, although it is very relevant !. It is situated in the Cradle of Humankind. The above co-ordinates are those for the entrance to the Parking and are not the final co-ordinates of the cache.

In 1881 Johannes Stephanus Minaar, whilst prospecting, found a gold nugget which led to the discovery of the Kromdraai Reef. Before a proclamation was signed by President Paul Kruger in 1885 – throwing open the the farm for public diggings – there was some confusion as to who actually owned the mining rights. Nevertheless, several diggers continued working the site, which yielded not only alluvial gold but also promised the chances that reef gold was there for the taking. After the “Kromdraai Gold Mining Company” was formed, the first gold was produced in 1887. Mining finally ceased in 1914. The site also has interesting other “stories”, not least those related to the Boer War.

In order to complete this cache, it is necessary to go on the very interesting, and fact-filled, guided tour, which takes an hour. There is a charge for the tour. The Head Guide/Curator, Gavin Whatley, is a “mine” of information himself – and will offer a discount to Geo-Cachers (just mention you are there for the Geo-Cache) ! It is well worth it. I trust you will all support this one !

The establishment is open weekends and public holidays, with tours running every hour on the hour. Weekday visits will require prior appointment, by phoning (011) 957-0205. Other attractions at the site are an Art & Sculpture Gallery as well as a picture framing business.

The location of this cache is underground, and a horizontal walk of about 75 metres from the co-ordinates: S26 00.244 E27 46.591, and is medium-sized suitable for trade items. Enjoy !
