[ENGLISH] Legend of the Water Source of Peter
“The Water Sources of Saint Peter of Rates are two situated in Balasar and Rates in the Village of Póvoa de Varzim; these water sources are, popularly, seen as miraculous because there is the belief that Saint Peter of Rates had used them to drink water.” (1)
“In the water source of Rates a pierced rock had existed that, according to popular belief, has effect dressings in sterility cases, being revenging to it with the pregnant females, women and animals. For this reason in day 26 of April, in some villages the pregnant women and the animals do not work.” (2)
“He has, in the extremity north of Rates, a water source called “Peter's Water Source”, of which the people counts some legends, the most known of which he says to exist, in the depths of the involving land, a magic Moorish woman, transformed into snake, which comes to the surface if somebody for midnight return, to read, without distrust, the book of Saint Cyprian and will be disenchanted if the same person to obtain to kiss the body to it frozen without fear. In recognition for its release, it charges - the Moorish woman “disenchanted” - transformed into pretty princess and the hero will earn an enormous treasure - (a golden yoke) - and will receive it in marriage.

[PORTUGUÊS] Lenda da Fonte do Pedro
«As Fontes de São Pedro de Rates são duas fontes situadas nas freguesias de Balasar e Rates no munícipio da Póvoa de Varzim; estas fontes são, popularmente, vistas como milagrosas devido a São Pedro de Rates que as terá usado para beber água.» (1)
«Na fonte de Rates existia uma pedra furada que, segundo crença popular, tem efeitos curativos em casos de esterilidade, sendo vingativo para com as fêmeas, mulheres e animais quando grávidas. Por este motivo no dia 26 de Abril, em algumas aldeias as mulheres grávidas e os animais não trabalham.» (2)
«Há, na extremidade norte da freguesia de Rates, uma fonte chamada “Fonte do Pedro”, da qual o povo conta várias lendas, a mais conhecida das quais diz existir, nas profundidades da terra envolvente, uma moura encantada, transformada em cobra, a qual vem à superfície se alguém por volta da meia-noite, ler, sem receio, o livro de São Cipriano e será desencantada se a mesma pessoa conseguir beijar-lhe o corpo gelado sem arrepios nem medo. Em reconhecimento pela sua libertação, a cobra-moura “desencantada” – transformada em linda princesa presenteará o seu heroi com um enorme tesouro (um jugo dourado) e oferecer-se-lhe-á em casamento.
Várias pessoas (especialmente jovens) têm tentado realizar a experiência, mas todos falham a meio da aventura, possuídos de medo.» (3)
Esta área foi intervencionada ao longo do trilho que dá acesso à fonte (com cercaduras, bancos e mesas, e passadiços com degraus), ao abrigo da constituição de roteiro interligando diferentes estrturas físicas espalhadas pelo território da freguesia
