La Carrière des Juifs du Pape, La Commanderie Saint-Jean le Vieux.

Français : Les coordonnées indiqués sont ceux de votre point de départ et non de la cache. La recherche seule vous prendra une vingtaine de minutes. Si vous souhaitez découvrir le patrimoine, un peu plus.

La cache est une boite à pellicule photo.

Vous allez  tout d’abord découvrir le lieu où se situait l'ancienne Carrière d'Avignon.

Suite à l'édit d'expulsion de Philippe le Bel en 1306 et l'établissement de la papauté en Avignon trois ans plus tard,
le Comtat venaissin et Avignon  vont accueillir  une communauté Juive, peu nombreuse - jamais plus de deux à trois milliers - mais très originale. A tel point qu'il est habituel de les appeler « les juifs du pape ».

Dans les villes de la Provence pontificale, les quartiers juifs sont appelés « carrières », du provençal carriero, « rue ». C'est en fait un ensemble de plusieurs rues, qui forment le territoire exclusif de la communauté. La vie des Juifs n’était pas de tout repos : ils étaient emprisonnés dans les carrières tous les soirs, et pendant trois jours au moment de Pâques. La carrière est l’équivalent du ghetto Italien.

Les noms  de rues en gardent encore la trace de nos jours : rue de la Juiverie, rue Jacob, rue Abraham.
Cette « carrière » était fermée par trois portes dont seul reste le portalet de la Calandre, porche que vous pouvez apercevoir à coté de la Synagogue.

Avec ou sans l'aide du plan fourni (pas nécessaire pour votre recherche), vous découvrirez au sol des tracés, dessinés à l'aide de blocs de pierres noires. Ils représentent l'emprise  au sol des bâtiments  du vieil Avignon et d'une partie de sa carrière. Vous vous dirigerez vers la place Pie où là encore ces traces vous feront remonter le temps et imaginer les ruelles, préexistantes à cette place.

Maintenant, il est temps de rechercher la cache, pour cela observez ce qu’il reste de la Commanderie Saint-Jean Le Vieux avec l’aide de la photo PLACE PIE. Relevez y une date utile (en chiffres romains).
Aprés conversion vous obtiendrez une année sous la forme A/B/C/D
La cache se trouve à : N 43° 56. (B) (C+D) (B+D-C) E 004° 48. (C) (A-D) (A+C+D).

English: Indicated co-ordinates  are those of your starting point  and not the hiding place one. Searching only the cache will take you  about twenty minutes. If you wish to discover architectural patrimony, a bit more.
The hiding place is one film canister box.

You go first to discover, the place where was situated the former Carrière of Avignon.

Further to the edict of eviction of Philippe le Bel in 1306 and the establishment of the papacy in Avignon three years later, Comtat venaissin and Avignon are going to welcome a Jewish, little numerous community - never more from two to three thousands - but very original. So much that it's  usual to call them " the Jews of the pope ".

In the cities of papal Provence, the Jewish districts are called "Carrières", from the Provençal language : carriero = street.
It 's in fact, a set of several streets, that form the exclusive territory of the community. The life of the Jews was not surely: they were imprisoned into Carrières every evening, and during three days at the time of Easter. The Carrière is the equivalent of the Italian ghetto.

Street names still keep the track nowadays: street de la Juiverie, street Jacob, street Abraham.
This Carrière was closed by three doors of which only rest the portalet of the Calandre, the hall which you can perceive next to the Synagogue.

With or without the assistance of the supplied plan (not necessities for your research), you will discover on the ground oulines, drawn by means of blocks of black stones. They represent  the ground hold of the buildings of old Avignon and part of its Carrière. You will go to the place Pie where even there these tracks will make you go back up throught the time and imagine alleys, pre-existent on this place.

Now, it's time to look for the cache,observe what it remains of the Commanderie Saint-Jean Le Vieux and by means of the picture PLACE PIE. Find there a useful date (in Roman numbers).
After conversion you will obtain one year under the shape A/B/C/D.
The cache is situated at: N 43° 56. (B) (C+D) (B+D-C) E 004° 48. (C) (A-D) (A+C+D).
