View Island Vault - take 2 Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

childwall43: I replaced this once, but I think it was more in hope than expectation that it would be a safe location for the new one, for very long.
Since there have been several new caches planted along the river nearby, I think it simplest to archive this one now and thank all those who took the trouble to look for it.

Geocache Description:

Second attempt at this cache - the first was trashed. The coordinates have moved slightly. The cache is on a very small island near Caversham Lock, on the Thames. It was a derelict boatyard when the council took it over in 1998 and restored it.

A suitable parking place for this, if you're driving, is Hill's Meadow, located at N 51 27.750 W 000 58.010. From there its a short walk across to the footbridge which gives access to the eastern entrance to island. Turn left along the bank of the channel until you see a large wooden footbridge; then a small one onto the island.
Alternatively, walking from the town centre: head for Reading Bridge (confusingly NOT Caversham Bridge, which is upstream), then turn right along to to Caversham lock. Cross the lock and the weir beyond it - the western entrance is immediately after the weir.
NOTE: it can be busy in the summer.

Offical description: "A pretty, quiet, relaxing island with a natural, open space with grassy paths and seating near to the weir at Caversham Lock. It now contains several wooden chain-saw carved sculptures.
PLEASE NOTE: Keep a close eye on children as the island has steep banks and dangerous river currents."

You might like to take a look at the official Flow Meter at N 51 27.676 W 000 58.043, which shows how fast the river is going.

The cache is a small Lok 'n Lok box.

Location: much of the island is quite open, and parts are overlooked by the new developments on nearby 'Heron Island', at the eastern end. Finding a secluded spot to hide the cache was quite a feat - and that might help you find it!
Please make sure it's not visible after you replace the box.
