Geocache Description:

This cache is located near one of Canberra's more quirky attractions!

"The national capital has ironically been described as ‘a good sheep paddock spoiled’ and this sculpture is a satirical salute to one of Canberra’s early pastoralists — James Ainslie.

In 1825, Ainslie arrived with 700 sheep to establish Duntroon Station which originally encompassed Reid, Campbell, Mount Ainslie, Glebe Park, and the Royal Military College. Ainslie returned to Scotland in 1835, leaving a flock of 20,000.

The embroidered waistcoat on the chair arm refers to Ainslie’s flamboyant dress sense, and to an incident when his clothes were stolen by bushrangers. According to the story, Ainslie pursued and caught the bushrangers and retrieved his favourite waistcoat."

The above was quoted from the "Civic Public Art Walking Tour" guide (NB: you'll need Adobe Acrobat for this PDF document) provided by the ACT Government. Les Kossatz is the artist reponsible for crafting this attraction out of cast aluminium and displaying it on a concrete pedestal.

This attraction provokes widespread comment and quizzical looks as well as some strange behaviour. While I was placing the cache, one youth leapt onto the back of one of the sheep as if surfing!

The cache, while not located on the attraction itself, is placed nearby with a good view of the attraction.

You may need tweezers to extract the log. Of course, BYO writing implement!

Please note that if you resort to the hint, the hint will tell you EXACTLY where the cache is as the satellites on the day were giving me +-9m accuracy.

If you have the geo-kiddies with you, shout them a ride on the nearby Civic Merry Go Round.
