The pink quartzite exposed at Falls Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota was laid down between 1.6 and 1.7 billion years ago (Proterozoic Era) along a shallow sea margin. The formation is known as the Sioux Quartzite, blocks of it can be found as far away as central Kansas having been deposited there during the Pleistocene glaciation. The sand grains that make up the quartzite were eroded from the Penokean Mountains located in the late Precambrian Minnesota. Look for ripple marks left behind on the ancient sea bed.
