Geocache Description:

PLEASE READ THE CACHE DESCRIPTION BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS CACHE. YOU WILL NEED TO CLIMB STEEP LADDERS TO MAKE IT TO THE TOP OF PIGEON HOUSE MOUNTAIN. IF YOU'RE AFRAID OF HEIGHTS OR UNFIT, DON’T ATTEMPT MY CACHE.

Like a high rise building towering above the city or a smoke stack jutting out from an industrial area this pinnacle stands tall above the surrounding bushland. It's one of the South Coasts more recognised icons and is a popular destination for all bushwalkers.

Pigeon House Mt lies on the outskirts of the Morton National Park, it makes a great ½ day walk offering 360deg views or it can be a good stepping stone for more experienced walkers who want to head deep into the Morton wilderness to such places as ‘The Castle’.

In setting this cache I consider myself a fairly fit and experienced bushwalker so I can do the walk alot quicker than the NPWS recommended 3.5hrs return. They do rate it as a grade 4 walk.

The easiest way to access this area is from Ulladulla where most 2wd’s will make it to the Pigeon House carpark, be warned the road is dirt and at times can be rough depending on the weather. The walk itself is on a well formed bushwalking track with the local park management recently upgrading sections of the trail. It is very steep in sections and there are exposed ladders to negotiate. So please remember this when considering this cache.

I have given a detailed description on how to find the geocache as it's rather difficult to find. GZ is on top, but is just below the trig. It can NOT be reached from the trig, so don’t climb over the handrails at the trig in an attempt to retrieve this cache. The cache is close to the edge but its not in a dangerous position, however I would suggest its not geokid friendly. In hiding this cache I have picked a spot that I hope is away from muggles.

To access the cache you'll need to duck under the handrail just near the end of the plastic boardwalk, making your way uphill you'll find a narrow crevasse with a big chockstone in the middle. You'll need to crawl through the crevasse and under the chockstone. At the end of the crevasse hug the wall and head around to the right for about 20m. You'll come to a couple of large rocks and some smaller ones which you'll need to climb down (about 400mm high). At this point the edge is in front of you, a small overhang cave can be seen to the right, but you need to go to the left for about 5m. The cache is hanging in a Bottlebrush tree near the edge. The vegetation regrowth from the 19/20 bushfires makes it very scratchy up on top. GPS coverage right at GZ was poor so see the photos for details. Be aware that muggles standing at the trig may see you approaching the cache. Enjoy the views, don’t forget your camera, take all your rubbish with you and take plenty of water.

Hope you enjoy.
