Vikings on the move? Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

If the owner wants it reopened, send me an e-mail and I’ll be happy to unarchive the cache listing if it still satisfies the requirement/guidelines.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,
Cervis Venator

Geocache Description:

The Viking Ship Museum on Bygdøy

The Viking Ship Museum on the Bygdøy peninsula was inaugurated in 1926. The museum hosts three ships which were excavated in viking graves between 1867 and 1904, from Tune, Gokstad and Oseberg respectively.

During the last decade the present and future condition of the ancient ships have caused concern and proposals for a “safer harbour” have been put forward, considered and debated.

Quite recently, the board of the University of Oslo decided to build a new museum for the ships in Bjørvika, Oslo.

The Museum

Will this be the final destiny of the ships? Will the local forces in Vestfold and Østfold succeed in their efforts to have the ships returned to their “homes” instead of Bjørvika?

Irrespective of when and to where the ships leave, you should pay the museum a visit while the ships still reside on Bygdøy.

Read more about the museum. Visit link

Opening hours are 09.00-18.00 between 1 May and 30 September and 11.00-16.00 between 1 October and 30 April.

According to Aftenposten 27 October 2009 an external report commisioned by the Ministry of Culture recommends that the ships remain in their current location.
