A
t Halsnæs, just behind the Lynæs Church in Northern Sealand a hill
is named the Valdemar Poulsen Hill. A stone is placed there as a
tribute to Valdemar Poulsen, the inventor of the Light Arc
transmitter.
A
t the beginning of the 1900-years Valdemar Poulsen invented and
developed a radio wave transmitter, the so-called Poulsen-arc that
was able of producing high frequency continuous electromagnetic
waves. In collaboration with the engineer and later professor Peder
Oluf Pedersen, an improved detector, for the reception of radio
waves, were developed by Poulsen. The first wireless telephony,
that is wireless transmission of speech, was realized with the
Poulsen system in 1907.
I
t was here at Lynæs on the hill behind the Church he in 1906, about
100 years ago were carrying out his experiments with the Light-Arc
Transmitter. On the hill a mast was erected for the purpose of
transmitting signals from the Light Arc transmitter, and next to
the mast a shack for the Light Arc Transmitter was situated, where
all his experiments was carried out.
V
aldemar Poulsen was born on November 23, 1869 in Copenhagen. His
birthplace is situated at Landemærket 3 next to the Round Tower.
His father, Jonas Poulsen was educated a lawyer and was employed in
the Ministry of Justice, where he later became appointed to
Assessor at the Supreme Court. The father was 33 years old at the
time when Valdemar were born. His mother, Rebekka Magdelene, nee.
Brandt, were 21 years old. One year earlier she had given birth to
the daughter Agnes, and in 1870 the daughter Fanny was
born.
I
t came as a major blow to the family when the mother died in 1873
in her young age of 25 years.
I
n his boyhood Valdemar Poulsen were amused with carrying out
research of electrostatic gadgets and induction apparatuses. The
larger the sparks produced, the better. In the school he almost
only paid attention to the teachings of physics, chemistry and
drawing. And, since he didn’t have much of a talent for Math, his
choice of study became that of language and history.
V
aldemar Poulsen died at July 23, 1942. His grave is situated at
Gentofte Cemetery. |
