My Story of Victoria's 1st
I bought my first GPS Garmin 12XL nearly 19 years ago and it still works. Had no idea what to do with it so researched a bit and found Geocaching. Thought it was a good idea to plant something and to my amazement... 11 days later someone found it.
It was called Melbourne’s 1st and it was called that because I wanted to be the first person to call something 1st. Melbourne popped into my head. Was hoping to get Australia’s 1st but I missed out.
Not long ago is was changed and is now known as Victoria’s 1st.
That place is special to me. While attending a routine training night at Kilmore State Emergency Service our Pages went off. On it was a job for an accident with people trapped at Murchison Spur Reedy Creek.
We all jumped into the emergency vehicles with lights and siren and made our way to accident scene.
Crikey... a car was parked at the lookout and somehow went over the edge with the occupants in it.
I do remember getting there and seeing this amazing scenery and wondering where’s this accident and was pointed to look down the hill.
You don’t forget that sort of stuff.
Back to my GPS and where to place this cache. Couldn’t think of anywhere better to place it and let other people visit this amazing spot.
Never ever thought geocaching would get so big.
I get goose bumps every time I think about that place and also knowing my cache sits in the top 100 world wide.
I hope Geocaching continues for a very time and I’ll do everything in my power to keep that cache alive. Geocaching HO has also recognised the importance and put plans in place to protect it. Day Gowland has played a big part in helping revive it when the cache was muggled a few times.
