Geocache Description:

The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Dirtbag Geocaching Society is pleased to welcome GeoWoodstock 14er to Colorful Colorado!

Katharine Lee Bates wrote the poem "America the Beautiful" after a visit to the summit of Pikes Peak, come see the views that inspired her!!
Plus...Where else in the World can you find and log 6 Different geocaching types in one place and at one time and all of them over 14,000 feet above sea level?
PIKES PEAK COLORADO!

There are three ways to get to the top of Pikes Peak Two of the three have a fee: Drive the Pikes Peak Highway ($) this is the recommended way, The Pikes Peak COG Railroad ($$), and you can also Hike to the top via the Barr Trail a 26 mile round trip class 1 hike, this is the only free way!

Info on Driving the Pikes Peak Highway PikesPeakColorado.com

The safe, scenic highway provides you the opportunity to enjoy Pikes Peak at your leisure. From the gateway at an elevation of 7,400 feet, you’ll encounter some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world as you wind your way through an alpine wonderland of scenic beauty, mountain reservoirs, beyond timberline, overtaking the clouds…all along the way to the 14,115 foot summit of America’s most famous mountain.

The COG RR

The Broadmoor's Pikes Peak Cog Railway will celebrate 125 years of operation on June 30th, 2016. On this date in 1891, the first steam train climbed from Manitou Springs to Pikes Peak, altitude 14,110 feet. Ever since, the trains (currently Swiss-made diesels) have taken millions of passengers on this scenic and unforgettable journey.

Hiking Barr Trail to the top

The classic route from Manitou Springs trailhead is Class 1. Get an early start as afternoon storms are common in the summer. If you want to take it easy.. do it as a camp over one night at Barr Cabin. Round trip distance is about 26 miles, so be prepared for a long day. Pikes Peak ranks as 31st highest in Colorado, but is certainly more famous than many of the higher peaks. Pike's Peak also has the greatest vertical gain of all the Colorado 14er's. The vertical gain from the trailhead in Manitou Springs to the summit is about 7400 feet.
