Geocache Description:

The first South Australian Wherigo cache.

Where We Used To Go

Welcome to a part of West Lakes I once knew well, often taking the dog for a long walk down across Delfin Island and back home again. It is also the setting of my first foray into Wherigo caches (and possibly your first time too).

What is a Wherigo Geocache?

Wherigo is a new way of utilizing GPS technology to play games, take tours, and geocache. Visit Wherigo.com to learn more about this new software.

Do I Need Special Equipment?

Yes and no. To find this cache the proper way and to truly experience the hunt the way it was meant to be experienced, you will need two things:

  1. A Wherigo Player
  2. The cartridge “West Lakes”

Garmin Colorado

The Wherigo Player comes pre installed on the Garmin Colorado series GPSr. A version of the player is available for download for use by GPS enabled Pocket PC devices. Click "Download Player" to get the PPC version.

Once you have the Player ready to go, you will need to download the cartridge for this cache. Click "Download Cartridge" to get it. (The related web page link at the top of the page also takes you to the cartridge page.)

Download Cartridge

However, you can also find the cache by using an emulator, and discovering where the cache is located. For this you need:

  1. The Wherigo Builder – which contains the emulator
  2. The cartridge “West Lakes”

Download Builder

The starting position is a suggested spot to park your geomobile, before heading off to the first zone (the area in blue if using the emulator). In the zone I’ll be waiting to talk to you, and then the second zone will then become enabled – a seat over on Delfin Island. In that zone I'll again be waiting for you, and you will also be able to obtain the coordinates for the cache, which should be an easy find.

The Outcome

This is a pretty simple Wherigo cartridge, but given that it might be your first, it may also be a bit of a learning curve to get to the end, but it shouldn’t be difficult. Feel free to email me for any assistance, and if it all goes pear shaped I’m happy to send you the final coordinates.

Logging

Logging your find here on geocaching.com is no different than any other cache (and you get a new icon on your profile page). Please indicate whether you used the player or the emulator.

You can also unlock the cartridge on Whereigo.com. After you've completed the cartridge you should see a "West Lakes.gws" file on your device. You can upload this file to Wherigo.com and it will "Unlock" it, giving you full credit for completing the cartridge (on the Wherigo site too). It will also help track the number of completions for this cartridge. You can also complete a log for the cartridge too on the Wherigo site.

Summary

Hope you enjoy it. I enjoyed playing around with the builder. There are so many possibilities, and I’ve now got a good reason to update the eTrex Legend.
