This cache has been placed to share this spot which at first
glance looks like a standard urban underpass but if you spend a few
minutes having a look around you'll see the signs that this modern
underpass was actually a bridge over the Nottingham canal which
snaked into Wollaton towards Wollaton colliery.
This was the site of Lock No.6 and evidence in visible on both
sides of the bridge. Have a look at the brick wall skirting the
path down from the road near the cache. From the cache, pass under
the road to see more lock masonry and even the original Lock
Numberplate No.6 still on the Lock side!
I had passed this spot a number of times and not realised that the
canal passed under here until reading the excellent Nottingham
Canal book by Bernard Chell!
This cache is NOT on the main road and if you find yourself
anywhere near a main road, you need to find a way to get lower down
and away from it! This cache is not at ground level so no need to
go grubbing around in the litter! And don't moan about the litter,
this is an urban area! It's probably wise not to visit here at
night especially on your own as it's a little off the beaten
track.
Congrats to Nottinghamman for a very swift FTF!
