Geocache Description:

We’ve been repeatedly prodded to place our first cache for some time now so …. All right already, this is our first “dam” cache . We hope you have as much fun finding it as we did doing it! New final placed 9-16-10. PLEASE rehide precisely so it survives!

Interesting Trivia Intro
Lake Winnipesaukee is a pivotal tourist attraction for N.H. It has been touted as the largest fresh water lake contained within the borders of one state in the continental U.S., consisting of 72 square miles of water surrounded by 182 miles of mainland shoreline. Its water level is artificially regulated to facilitate the use of the lake for recreational enjoyment. The outflow into Lake Opechee and beyond is measured in cubic feet per second (CFS) and is managed at the Lakeport Dam. Depending on date, timing, and prevailing climatic conditions this dam can be a spectacular sight. Dam outflow rates generally range from 250 to 1050 CFS, with the long-term average at about 550 CFS.

To put this in perspective, 550 CFS will fill two 10-wheeled commercial dump trucks per second, or the average residential swimming pool in about 4.65 seconds. 1920 CFS is enough to fill about 45 swimming pools each minute. Over a 24 hour period, this yields about 1.24 billion gallons, or enough water to lower the level of Lake Winnipesaukee one inch.

Following the ‘07 spring flooding, outflow peaked on 4/26 at 2395 CFS. This rate fills the average residential swimming pool in 1.06 seconds! Even at this rate it still took three weeks to return the big lake to its nominal height. Welcome to where it all happens… Cache Flow.

The Important Stuff

The hide relies heavily on your stealth for its survival. Muggles frequent this area. You will also be in view of (but not trespassing on) Muggle realty. Please be on your best secret agent behavior.

Stage 1 is a micro located at the published coords and contains coords for the final.

Stage 2 New final (9-16-10) is a sandwich-sized, well cammo'd Lock N Lock. Please re-hide carefully and avoid browsing Muggles posing as innocent fishermen.

There is no need to enter any fenced-off areas whatsoever. Ample free parking for both stages is suggested anywhere around N43 32.869 W071 27.882. The new dam bridge (aka Elm St.) features a wide, safe, well lit sidewalk on both sides for your convenience (and viewing).

The “O” Steaks and Seafood {very good} is right across the parking lot with a full bar to either:

A) Celebrate your successful find OR…
B) Anesthetize the agony of DNF OR…
C) Simply feed you and yours if you’re hungry

Hints are intentionally omitted to provide a slightly higher degree of difficulty. Geo-sense and determination should make the need for a hint unnecessary. Judging by the number of successful finds thus far we'd have to say we're correct. E-mail us if you need a nudge of some kind and we’ll cheerfully help you out.

Enjoy!!
