Geocache Description:

An unspoilt little village in the North Mayo Gaeltacht on Broadhaven Bay, where five local men were imprisoned on June 29, 2005 for attempting to obstruct the laying a high pressure gas pipe-line through the area by a multi-national company.

The Rossport Five are James Brendan Philbin, Philip McGrath, Vincent McGrath, Willie Corduff and Micheál Ó Seighin.

Note the mural of Ken Sara Wiwa on your left as you leave Rossport along the coast road. He was an author and playwright who accused the same multi-national company of destroying farmland and villages in the Ogoni region of the Niger Delta. He was hanged along with eight other protesters on November 10, 1995 by the Nigerian Military Government. Mrs Zola and myself were living in Nigeria at the time of his execution..

The Ogoni Nine were Ken Saro-Wiwa, Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine..

Enjoy the views. They may not exist for much longer.
