Bei Altenahr können Fahrzeuge die Ahr mithilfe einer sogenannten Furt überqueren, d.h. die Fahrzeuge fahren durch das Wasser des Flusses, die Stelle ist aber bautechnisch so präpariert, dass (bei normalem Wasserstand des Flusses) eine gefahrlose Überquerung auch für normale Fahrzeuge möglich ist.

Früher bestand die Furt nur aus Betonbefestigungen, die vom Wasser des Flusses überspült worden sind. Diese Art von Querbauwerk ist aber ein unüberwindbares Hindernis für Wanderfische und andere im Fluss lebende Organismen und daher ein fataler Eingriff in die Fischfauna. Daher wurde vor ein paar Jahren der mittlere Teil der Furt durch ein Gitter ersetzt, das unterspült werden kann und Wanderfischen wieder den Flussaufstieg ermöglicht.

Die Furt ist eine wichtige Verkehrsverbindung unter anderem für die nahegelene Jugendherberge: Lange Zeit war sie die einzige Möglichkeit, die Herberge mit dem Auto zu erreichen, und für größere Fahrzeuge ist sie es heute immer noch. Bei Hochwasser war die Jugendherberge regelmäßig von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten. Inzwischen gibt es für PKWs die Möglichkeit, die Herberge von der anderen Flussseite aus anzufahren. Auch bei meinem Besuch war die Furt gerade unpassierbar, da sie von Treibholz blockiert war, das vom vorherigen Ahrhochwasser angespült worden ist.
Near Altenahr vehicles can cross the river Ahr by means of a so-called ford (German: Furt), i.e. the vehicles drive through the water of the river, but the site is technically prepared so that (at normal water level of the river) a safe crossing is possible even for normal vehicles.

In the past, the ford consisted only of concrete fortifications overflowed by the river's water. However, this type of transverse structure is an insurmountable obstacle to migratory fish and other organisms living in the river and therefore a fatal intervention in the fish fauna. Therefore, a few years ago, the middle part of the ford was replaced by a lattice that can be undercut by water and allows migratory fish to climb the river again.

The ford is an important transportation route for the nearby youth hostel, among other places. For a long time, it was the only way to reach the hostel by car and for larger vehicles, it is still today. At high tide, the youth hostel was regularly cut off from the outside world. Meanwhile, there is a possibility for cars to drive to the hostel from the other side of the river. Also during my visit, the ford was just impassable, as it was blocked by driftwood washed up from the previous high tide.
