Die Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn ist eine der größten und traditionsreichsten Universitäten in Deutschland. Im Sommersemester 2016 waren etwa 35.600 Studenten immatrikuliert. Gelehrt werden u.a. Fächer aus den Fakultäten der evangelischen und katholischen Theologie, der landwirtschaftlichen Fakultät, der mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät, der Medizin, Philisophie und Jura.

1818 wurde die Universität als Nachfolger der Kurkölnischen Akademie Bonn gegründet. Zu diesem Anlass schenkte König Friedrich III. von Preussen das Kurfürstliche Schloß in der Bonner Innenstadt einschließlich dem Hofgarten der Universität. Seitdem ist das Schloss das sogenannte Universitätshauptgebäude der Uni Bonn, auch wenn inzwischen die Räumlichkeiten für die stetig wachsenden Studierendenzahlen bei weitem nicht mehr ausreichen. Ein Ausbau des Hauptgebäudes war aufgrund der zentralen Lage nicht praktikabel, so dass statt dessen über das Stadtgebiet verteilt neue Standorte der Universität entstanden sind. Die wichtigsten sind:
  • Hauptgebäude: Sprachen, Philosophie, Theologie, Archäologie
  • Poppelsdorf: Mathematik, Physik, Geographie, Biologie, Anatomie, Agrarwissenschaften
  • Juridicum: Jura, BWL
  • Römerlager: Informatik, Pädagogik, Sport
  • Endenich: Astronomie, Chemie, Pharmazie
  • Venusberg: Medizin
Seit 2012 entsteht in Bonn-Poppelsdorf ein neuer Campus, um die Institute und Einrichtungen der Universität wieder mehr zu zentralisieren. Rings um die Nußallee haben sich hier bereits seit vielen Jahrzehnten insbesondere naturwissenschaftliche Fakultäten angesiedelt (s.o.). Man konnte allerdings nie von einem Uni-Campus sprechen, da die Universität größtenteils auf bestehende Bauten zurückgreifen und zum Teil sogar Wohnhäuser anmieten musste, um in dem dicht bebauten Wohnviertel Raum für die Lehre und Forschung zu schaffen.

Dies soll sich nun ändern und auf den Flächen der ehemaligen Feldern der landwirtschaftlichen Institute nahe der alten Institute an der Nußallee entsteht der neue Campus. 2017 wurde der große, zentrale Platz und die ersten neuen Gebäudekomplexe fertiggestellt und bezogen. Neben den bereits in Poppelsdorf ansässigen Instituten sollen die Informatik, Ernährungs- und Lebensmittelwissenschaft und der Hochschulsport Platz in den neuen Gebäuden finden. Ein neues Hörsaalzentrum sowie ein Laborzentrum sind in Bau. Die modernisierte Mensa, die naturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek sowie ein Wohnheim für Studenten sind in den Campus integriert worden. Die vollständige Fertigstellung des gesamten Campus mit einer Größe von 260.000 Quadratmetern ist bis zum Jahr 2032 geplant.
The Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn is one of the largest and most traditional universities of Germany. In summer semester 2016 about 35.600 students were enrolled. Among others, courses from the faculties of evangelic and catholic theology, the agricultural faculty, the mathematical-scientific faculty, medical science, philosophy, and law are held here.

In 1818, the university was founded as successor of the "Kurkölnische Akademie Bonn". On this occasion, King Friedrich III. von Preussen donated the Electoral castle in the center of Bonn including the park "Hofgarten" to the university. Since then, the castle is the so-called university main building, even though today the premises are by far not sufficient for the growing number of students. An extension of the main building was not feasible due to the central position. Instead, new sites of the university were established across the town. The most important ones are:
  • Main building: Languages, philosophy, theology, archeology
  • Poppelsdorf: Mathematics, physics, geography, biology, anatomy, agricultural science
  • Juridicum: Law, business studies
  • Römerlager: Computer science, education science, sports
  • Endenich: Astronomy, chemistry, pharmacy
  • Venusberg: Medical science
Since 2012, a new campus is being built in Bonn-Poppelsdorf in order to centralize the institutes and facilities of the university. For many decades, especially natural science faculties have settled here around the Nußallee (see above). However, one could never speak of a university campus, as the university had to rely largely on existing buildings and in some cases even had to rent apartment buildings to create space in the densely built residential area for teaching and research.

This is about to change and the new campus is being built on the grounds of the former fields of the agricultural institutes near the old institutes on Nußallee. In 2017, the large, central square and the first new building complexes were completed and occupied. In addition to the institutes already based in Poppelsdorf, computer science, nutrition and food science and university sports will find space in the new buildings. A new auditorium center and a laboratory center are under construction. The refurbished refectory, the science library and a hostel for students have been integrated into the campus. The complete completion of the entire campus with a size of 260,000 square meters is planned for the year 2032.
