Heinrich Karl Erben (geboren am 19. Mai 1921 in Prag) war ein berühmter Paläontologe. Nach Lehraufträgen an den Universitäten von Tübingen, Würzburg und Mexiko-Stadt gründete er 1963 in Bonn das Institut für Paläontologie, das er fortan als Direktor leitete. Seine Forschung galt insbesondere der Paläobiologie und der Evolutionsforschung. Forschungs- und Vortragsreisen führten Erben um die ganze Welt. Durch seine Sachbücher zur Evolution und seine Erkenntnisse über das Aussterben der Dinosaurier wurde er einem breiteren Publikum bekannt.

Seinen Lebensabend verbrachte Erben fast vollständig erblindet in Wachtberg-Adendorf. Am 15. Juli 1997 starb er und wurde hier auf dem Poppelsdorfer Friedhof eingeäschert und begraben. In Gedenken an sein Vermächtnis wurde die Grabplatte seines Urnengrabes mit einem Ammoniten verziert.

Heinrich Karl Erben (born May 19th 1921 in Prague) was a famous paleontologist. After lecturing at the universities of Tübingen, Würzburg and Mexico City, he founded the Institute for Paleontology in Bonn in 1963, which he then headed as director. His research was particularly concerned with paleobiology and evolutionary research. Research and lecture tours led him all around the world. Through his books on evolution and his findings on the extinction of dinosaurs, he became known to a broader audience.

Erben spent his remaining years in Wachtberg-Adendorf almost completely blinded. He died on July 15th 1997 and was cremated and buried here at the cemetery of Poppelsdorf. In commemoration of his legacy, the burial plate of his urn grave was decorated with an ammonite.
