August Kekulé, später Kekule von Stradonitz, geboren am 07.09.1829 in Darmstadt, war ein berühmter Chemiker. Er forschte und lehrte 1867-1896 am Chemischen Institut der Universität Bonn und legte dort u.a. die Grundlagen für die moderne Strukturtheorie der organischen Chemie. Insbesondere seine Forschungen zum Benzolmolekül, zur Bindungstheorie sowie die Entdeckung der Azokupplung haben dazu beigetragen. Seine Arbeiten führten zu einem Boom der deutschen Chemieindustrie, insbesondere der Farbstoffhersteller. Am 13.07.1896 starb Kekulé in Bonn und liegt seitdem hier auf dem Friedhof in Bonn-Poppelsdorf.

Especially his research on the benzene molecule, on linkage theory, and his discovery of azo coupling have contributed to fundamental research. His work lead to a boom of the German chemical industry, especially dye producers. On 7/13/1896 Kekulé died in Bonn and was buried here in Bonn-Poppelsdorf.
