HOOPER, Colo. — "I like humans, they're fun," Judy Messoline said as she showed a visitor through her vortex garden, which psychics have said contains not just one, but two separate portals to a parallel universe... "The world needs a place where people can go to talk about their experiences and not be laughed at," she said.
That place is the UFO Watchtower, located about 2.5 miles north of Hooper (a small town in the Colorado San Luis Valley). Messoline opened the attraction in 2000 which has since seen over 20,000 visitors and garnered world-wide attention.
One of Ms. Messoline’s principles in building the Watchtower a decade ago, in an attempt to raise cash as her cattle ranch collapsed in economic ruin, was that U.F.O.-spotting should be a hoot, and whenever possible, a party.
That fun-loving spirit of all things extra-terrestrial is evident throughout in the form of alien cutouts, satellite dishes and trinkets left by visitors. A gift shop contains a log that visitors can add their own UFO experience to as well as various UFO and alien paraphernalia. For $10 a night, guests can spend the night in the adjacent campground and gaze into the spectacularly dark night sky for a glimpse of something otherworldly.
