Right on this road to the COLORADO STATE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS HOME (open 9-4 daily), for the aged and disabled who have served in some branch of military service. The State furnishes inmates lodging, food, spending money, and all other living costs, the only stipulation being that they are not permitted to claim pensions. The red-roofed, white-tiled buildings, at the edge of a lake, house a hospital and living quarters. Although the primary purpose of the lake is for irrigation, it has been developed as a recreational center. The institution is virtually self-supporting, with large farming tracts, greenhouses, and an electric light plant.

Excerpt from Colorado: A Guide to the Highest State, 1941
Established by Colorado State Legislature in 1889, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Home provided a place for disabled veterans of the Civil War to live and be cared for. By the early 1900's, the campus sported a cemetery, barracks, commander’s residence, administration building, and chapel (many of which are still visible today).

Today the facility is called the Colorado State Veterans Center at Homelake and still serves honorably discharged and disabled veterans of every war in U.S. history. However, many of the original buildings have fallen into disrepair and the site was placed on the list of endangered sites by Colorado Preservation, Inc. in 2005. You can visit the veterans museum at Homelake and pick up a walking tour brochure for more information about each unique piece of history.
