When William Newlin purchased 160 acres of land from John Tallman in 1878, he set aside this portion as a private cemetery for his family. William and his wife Elizabeth are buried within the iron fence with a large headstone marking the graves. Just outside the fence is another headstone with the name "Mary E. Newlin" (the Newlin's daughter).
The cemetery was intended only for the Newlin family, as made clear by the Newlin Cemetery Trust created by William Newlin in 1898. However, just behind the fenced plot lie three unmarked graves covered with white stones. According to family lore, the graves contain the remains of Moses Parker and his family. As the story goes, Moses committed suicide after the his wife Hattie and their daughter Mary died of cholera sometime in the late 1890s. Because of the nature of his death, he could not be buried in the city cemetery and Mr. Newlin allowed them to rest on his property.
