The original wooden church in this place was destroyed by a fire in 1648 and replaced by this stone church.
It is the last of shatrovye hramy - "tent-like churches" in Moscow. This unique style was popular in Russia in 16th-17th century, until in 1653 Patriarch Nikon issued a ban on building churches in this style. It is said that he has been shocked when he saw this new church.
In 1938, the church was closed and used as an office building, then for some time even as a circus hall. The last major repairs took place in 1957.
In 1990 it has been returned back to the Orthodox church and since 1991 the worship service has been restored.
