Die Zeche Zollverein in Essen war von 1851 bis 1986 eines der größten Steinkohlebergwerke im Ruhrgebiet. Nach ihrer Schließung wurde das Gelände zu einem Industriedenkmal und Kulturzentrum umgebaut und für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Herzstück ist das Ruhr Museum zur Geschichte der Zeche und der Umgebung.

Das Museum wurde in der sogenannten Kohlenwäsche eingerichtet, einem großen, alten Industriegebäude mitten auf dem Zechengelände. Bei der Umgestaltung zum Museum wurde darauf geachtet, möglichst viel der originalen Innenausstattung und Maschinen zu erhalten. Kombiniert wurden die alten Industrieanlagen mit modernen, kunstvollen Elementen und Beleuchtung.

Auf insgesamt 8 Ebenen wird in der Dauerausstellung des Museums die Geschichte und Kultur der Zeche gezeigt. Das alltägliche Leben der Kumpel wird ebenso beleuchtet wie die Auswirkungen des Bergbaus auf die Umwelt und die Natur. Wechselausstellungen beschäftigen sich zudem mit verschiedenen Themen des Ruhrgebiets. Der Eingang des Museums befindet sich auf einer der obersten Etagen und wird über die längste freistehende Rolltreppe Deutschlands erreicht.

The Zeche Zollverein in Essen was one of the largest hard coal mines in the Ruhr area from 1851 to 1986. After its closure, the site was converted into an industrial monument and cultural center and opened to the public. The centerpiece is the Ruhr Museum on the history of the colliery and the surrounding area.

The museum was set up in the so-called coal wash, a large, old industrial building in the middle of the colliery site. During the transformation into a museum, care was taken to preserve as much of the original interior and machinery as possible. The old industrial facilities were combined with modern, artistic elements and lighting.

The permanent exhibition of the museum shows the history and culture of the colliery on a total of 8 levels. The everyday life of the miners is highlighted, as well as the impact of mining on the environment and nature. In addition, temporary exhibitions deal with various topics of the Ruhr area. The entrance to the museum is on one of the top floors and is accessed via Germany's longest free-standing escalator.
