Markusbrunnen - Zülpich-Nemmenich, Germany - Holy Wells on Waymarking.com

Der Markusbrunnen befindet sich am östlichen Ortsausgang von Nemmenich, einem Ortsteil der Stadt Zülpich im Kreis Euskirchen. Er ist vermutlich über 2500 Jahre alt und wurde zunächst von hier siedelnden Kelten und später Römern und Franken genutzt.

Seinen heutigen Namen erhielt der Brunnen nach der Christianisierung im Mittelalter. Sie wurde dem Heiligen Markus gewidmet und wurde zum Ziel von Prozessionen und Pilgern. Der Brunnen wurde eingefriedet und ein Kreuz aufgestellt. Das hölzerne Kreuz wurde später duch ein Steinkreuz ersetzt.

Auch heute organisiert die katholische Kirchengemeinde St. Peter in Nemmenich noch Prozessionen zum Markusbrunnen: Die sogenannte Markus-Prozession findet jährlich am 25. April statt, dem Namenstag des Heiligen Markus. An diesem Tag wird in die Niesche am Brunnen eine Heiligenfigur gestellt und an das früher wie heute lebenswichtige und kostbare Lebensmittel Wasser erinnert.

2015 wurde eine Informationstafel an der Quelle aufgestellt.

The natural spring Markusbrunnen (i.e. Mark's well) is located at the eastern exit of Nemmenich, a district of the city of Zülpich in the municipality of Euskirchen. It is believed to be over 2500 years old and was first used by Celts who settled here and later by Romans and Franks.

The spring got its current name after Christianization in the Middle Ages. It was dedicated to Saint Mark and became the destination of processions and pilgrims. The well was fenced in and a cross was erected. The wooden cross was later replaced by a stone cross.

Even today, the Catholic parish of St. Peter in Nemmenich still organizes processions to the well: The so-called St. Mark's procession takes place annually on April 25, the name day of St. Mark. On this day a figure of the saint is placed in the niche by the well and people remember of the vital and precious food water in the past and now.

In 2015 an information board was put up at the spring.
