NL: De Sint-Matthiaskerk is een gotische kerk in het oude centrum van Maastricht. In de volksmond spreekt men hier ook wel over de Sint-Matthijs. De kerk is gewijd aan de heilige apostel Matthias. Het is een van de vier grote rooms-katholieke parochiekerken in het centrum van Maastricht. De eerste steen is gelegd op 24 februari 1351. Doordat alleen de voorzijde van de kerk vanaf de Boschstraat zichtbaar is, vergissen veel mensen zich in de grote van de kerk. In de kerk bevinden zich enkele prachtige glas in lood ramen, een beeld van Maria Magdalena, een 15e eeuwse piëta, een Lodewijk XIV preekstoel, het tochtportaal uit de voormalige Augustijnenkerk, een 18e eeuwse doopvont, een Bivignat orgel uit 1809, een klokkenstoel met geluid en twee moderne klokken uit 1966. In de kerk is een kleine kapel opgericht die gewijd is aan “Onze Lieve Vrouw van Banneux”. Volgens een volksmythe is de kerk betaald met de boete die winkeliers in de Boschstraat oplegden aan vloekende mensen.


EN: The Saint-Matthiaschurch is a gothic church in the old center of Maastricht. In popular parlance, is also referred to as Saint Matthijs. The church is dedicated to the holy apostle Matthias. It is one of the four large Roman Catholic parish churches in the center of Maastricht. The first stone was laid on February 24, 1351.
