Esta foi a primeira geocoin portuguesa a ser produzida! Os mentores do projecto foram dois bem conhecidos geocachers portugueses, que convenceram um produtor e vendedor a alimentar a ideia e a produzir esta bela geocoin. Quando foi produzida a geocoin não registou um grande sucesso comercial, mas atualmente é uma das geocoins portuguesas mais cobiçadas.

Astrolábio Náutico

O astrolábio é um instrumento muito antigo para medir ângulos e que serve, nomeadamente, para medir a altura dos astros acima do horizonte. Atribui-se a sua invenção a Hiparco, considerado por vezes o pai da astronomia e da trigonometria. Ptolomeu designa por astrolábio a esfera armilar, que os árabes combinaram com o globo celeste e aperfeiçoaram criando assim o astrolábio esférico. O astrolábio planisférico, é uma simplificação que resulta numa projecção estereográfica polar da esfera celeste sobre um plano. Os gregos já o conheciam mas foi através dos árabes, que o introduziram na Península Ibérica, que chegou à Europa.

Esfera Armilar

Esfera com anéis ou armilas utilizadas como representação do Universo. Nessas esferas a Terra ocupa a posição central, o que corresponde à visão ptolomaica do cosmos, e as armilas principais representam os meridianos celestes, na vertical, o equador, os trópicos e os círculos polares, na horizontal, e a banda do zodíaco, em diagonal. Em rigor, a banda do zodíaco deveria ser tangente aos dois círculos tropicais, estando pois inclinada 23 graus e meio em relação ao equador. No entanto, por ignorância ou por razões estéticas, essa banda aparece habitualmente traçada com uma inclinação muito maior. É também vulgar serem omitidos os círculos polares. A esfera armilar tornou-se um símbolo manuelino de poder marítimo, político e económico associado às navegações. Aparece ainda hoje em vários símbolos lusos, nomeadamente na bandeira nacional.

This was the first Portuguese geocoin to be produced! The mentors of the project were two well-known Portuguese geocachers, who convinced a producer and seller to feed the idea and produce this beautiful geocoin. When it was produced the geocoin did not register a great commercial success, but at the moment it is one of the most coveted Portuguese geocoins.

Nautical Astrolabe

The astrolabe is a very ancient instrument to measure angles and serves, in particular, to measure the height of the stars above the horizon. Its invention is attributed to Hipparchus, sometimes considered the father of astronomy and trigonometry. Ptolemy designates by astrolabe the armillary sphere, which the Arabs combined with the celestial globe and perfected thus creating the spherical astrolabe. The planispheric astrolabe is a simplification that results in a polar stereographic projection of the celestial sphere on a plane. The Greeks already knew it but it was through the Arabs, who introduced it in the Iberian Peninsula, that arrived at Europe.

Armillary sphere

Sphere with rings or armillas used as a representation of the Universe. In these spheres the Earth occupies the central position, which corresponds to the Ptolemaic view of the cosmos, and the principal aryles represent the celestial meridians, vertically, the equator, the tropics and the polar circles horizontally, and the zodiac band in diagonal. Strictly speaking, the band of the zodiac should be tangent to the two tropical circles, being therefore inclined 23 degrees and a half in relation to the equator. However, out of ignorance or for aesthetic reasons, this band usually appears drawn with a much greater slope. It is also common to omit the polar circles. The armillary sphere has become a Manueline symbol of maritime, political and economic power associated with navigations. It appears still today in several Portuguese symbols, in particular in the national flag.
