Aon Adhairc ist Gälisch für Einhorn

In der Heraldik ist das Einhorn vor allem als Symbol Schottlands bekannt. Das Einhorn wurde ausgewählt, weil es als stolzes und hochmütiges Tier angesehen wurde, das lieber sterben als gefangen genommen werden würde, so wie die Schotten kämpfen würden, um souverän und unbesiegt zu bleiben. Zwei Einhörner unterstützten die königlichen Waffen des Königs der Schotten und seit der Vereinigung von 1707 von England und Schottland wurden die königlichen Waffen des Vereinigten Königreichs von einem Einhorn zusammen mit einem englischen Löwen getragen.

In heraldry the unicorn is best known as the symbol of Scotland. The unicorn was chosen because it was seen as a proud and haughty beast which would rather die than be captured, just as Scots would fight to remain sovereign and unconquered.Two unicorns supported the royal arms of the King of Scots, and since the 1707 union of England and Scotland, the royal arms of the United Kingdom have been supported by a unicorn along with an English lion.
