About This Item

The Geocoin

We bought this from another cacher who needed to sell some of her collection. This geocoin was created by Christopher Waddell. There were several Editions of this, in various finishes and numerous "fill" colors. We believe that this is from the Second Edition, which was issued in November of 2013. This edition is the only one that had a shiny copper finish, and only nine of this particular finish and color were made, making this an XLE.

The scarab (dung) beetle was highly revered in Ancient Egypt, and it came to represent the god Khepri (it means to emerge, or to come into being), one of the gods of creation and rebirth. Ancient Egyptians believed that the scarab beetle was special, as it would lay its eggs in a ball of dung and push it along the ground, and the young beetles would eventually emerge from the ball as if created from nothing. Thus, these beetles were strongly associated with rebirth, renewal and resurrection, and scarab amulets would often be buried with the dead to ensure the rebirth of the deceased in the afterlife. The Egyptians also made a connection between the movement of the sun across the sky and the movement of the ball of dung pushed by the beetle. One myth suggests that Khepri pushed the sun across the sky ahead of him, and that this movement was constant. Every night, Khepri would push the sun down into the underworld, and every morning the sun would emerge again and travel across the sky.
