An diesem Datum wurde auf Anordnung von US-Präsident Bill Clinton die künstliche Verschlechterung (selective availability) des GPS Signals abgeschaltet. Erstmals konnte Jedermann dieses Signal für eigene und andere Zwecke nutzen. Die erste und wichtigste Voraussetzung zum Geocaching wurde somit geschaffen.
