About This Item

10th Hide Geocoin

To celebrate my 10th hide: GC5FRBG - "St Oswald - Bishop of Worcester"

In West Midlands, United Kingdom
NW NW 1.2 mi from my home location

Geocache Description:

One of a mini series of 4 unnumbered mystery caches about the canonized Bishops of Worcester. This cache will help you learn a little bit more about St Oswald. The cache is not at the above co-ordinates, those are co-ordinates for the Cathedral where Oswald served as Bishop from 961-922AD. All the answers to this puzzle can be found on the internet.

Oswald was of Danish ancestry, but brought up by his uncle, Oda, who sent him to France to the abbey of Fleury to become a monk. After a number of years at Fleury, Oswald returned to England at the request of his uncle, who died before Oswald returned. With his uncle's death, Oswald needed a patron and turned to another kinsman, Oskytel, who had recently become Archbishop of York. His activity for Oskytel attracted the notice of Archbishop Dunstan who had Oswald consecrated as Bishop of Worcester in 961. In 972 Oswald was promoted to the see of York, although he continued to hold Worcester also.

The cache can be found at N 52° [H-B+I].[E-{H+(F-A-I)}] W 002° [D].[{(G-E-C)/3}+{(F-1)x3}]

A= How many years after his death were his remains translated to the Cathedral?

B= Feast day in February

C= Unusual date on which he died in February 922

D= In 972 Oswald journeyed to Rome to receive a pallium from Pope John ____?

E= What year was he promoted to the See of York?

F= There were a number of Bishops of Worcester pre Conquest, which number in the list was Oswald?

G= In which year was a report published about an archaeological excavation on part of the St Oswald's site which unearthed Saxo-Norman mouldings, later re-used in mediaeval walls?

H= On which A road is St Oswald's Hospital located?

I= The number of streets in Worcester (WR postcode) named for the Saint (not including the hospital).

You can check your answers for this puzzle on GeoChecker.com.

Well done to CTJones05c and mljwaffle007 for being joint FTFs (apparently a close run thing!!)
