About This Item

25th Hide Geocoin

To celebrate my 25th hide: GC5FYWF - "Who was he? Athelstan"

In West Midlands, United Kingdom
NW NW 0.7 mi from my home location

Geocache Description:

Part of my unnumbered Who Was S/He? series, looking at historical/important people who have shaped the naming of our streets and buildings in Worcester. This one is all about Althestan. The cache is not at the above coordinates, though it is not too far away...as you get to GZ, you will spot the link on your right! Please bring a pen or pencil to sign the log.

Æthelstan or Athelstan was King of the Anglo-Saxons from 924 to 927 and King of the English from 927 to 939. He was the son of King Edward the Elder and his first wife, Ecgwynn. Modern historians regard him as the first King of England and one of the greatest Anglo-Saxon kings. He never married, and was succeeded by his half-brother, Edmund.

The cache can be found at  N 52° [H+I].[0][{D+(F-H)}-{B+(A-H)}] W 002° [(G-C)+I+(F/I)].[{(E-G)-(DxH)}-(I-H)]

A= In which century was he born?

B= The date in October 939 on which he died

C= The year in which his half brother Edwin died

D= In which decade of the 900s did Athelstan's nephew, King Edgar, reform the monetary system to give Anglo-Saxon England the most advanced currency in Europe? *As a multiple of 10, not the single digit

E= In which year was his first biography, by Sarah Foot, published?

F= There is a gap which historians fail to be able to explain, in which no charters survive. How many years long is this gap?

G= In which year did he send an English fleet to help his foster-son, Alan II, Duke of Brittany, to regain his ancestral lands, which had been conquered by the Vikings?

H= The date in September 925 on which his coronation took place.

I=  When King Constantine of Scotland, King Hywel Dda of Deheubarth, Ealdred of Bamburgh, and King Owain of Strathclyde (or Morgan ap Owain of Gwent) accepted Æthelstan's overlordship, how many years of peace in the North did this lead to?
