About This Item

The Dryads

The Dryad's - Handmaidens of Artemis

The Dryad's - Handmaidens of Artemis

Stories have been told for thousands of years of both the beguiling beauty and mischievous dangers of the Dryads. These reclusive woodland nymphs were the guardians of nature and individually tied to locations of beauty as remarkable as themselves. They served Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, as her wardens of nature and watched over flowing springs, ancient timbers, beautiful groves and secret grottoes.

The most striking aspect of the Dryads is how closely their duties and love of nature's treasures closely reflects those of women geocachers. They care for nature. leave no trace, are each beautiful in their own unique fashion and of course constantly frustrate the menfolk.

The ancient Greeks delighted in tails of these shy woodland spirits being pursued by men and they still do today. Men simply can't resist them. They represent beauty in from and deed being hunters, mothers, daughters, lovers, sweet voiced vixens and honey-tongued fertile flowers promising new life while protecting nature. They are everything most beautiful about women in a single entity. Come celebrate their distint beauty with us.

On the face of this coin we have a member of The Dryads in calm repose looking serenely down over the symbols of her duties in service to Artemis. The first is a water drop testifying to guardianship of natural springs, pools, streams and waters of the woodlands. The second, a newly opened blossom as symbol of perfect fertility waiting to conceive life anew. The tird, heads of grain as the fruits of life coming to fruition. The center piece, the greek bow and huntresses arrows of Artemis as guardian of her domain. The bee is next as a symbol of constantly nurturing to coax new life into being. Next, the oak leak is a symbol of her position as warden of the forest. Lastly, the musical note, is a dual motif of creativity and lasting beauty. Each of these symbols lies in orderover the master symbol of the crescent moon which is Artemis' personal symbol.

The Dryad herself is enemeled in the honeyed tones of natural wood  and surrounded by a fully 3D rendered frame of ancient Greek design. The pattern is Corinthian carving, recreated through historical sketches from the ancient Greek city of Corinth circa 450BC.

The reverse side of this coin portrays the strength of Artemis herself as huntress and leader of the Dryads. As the daughter of Zeus and Leto she stood high in order of the Greek pantheon and no shrinking violet.

One of the most fascinating pieces of information uncovered in researching for this coin was the fact that in ancient Greek life it was sicially acceptable to be a strong and independent woman. Unmarried, outspoken, ambitious and downright intrepid women were considered to be the wards of Artemis and favored with her love. If ever there were a Goddess custom-fitted to grace the Geocaching woman with skill and beauty, Artemis stands out as the most appropriate.

Often seen only as a fleeting glance of movement in the brush, the blinking of an eye or laughter from an unknown source, she is the fleet footed huntress, a reflection in water or the prospect of life in perfect renewing growth. Her personal symbols of the moon, oak and the hunted stag lie concealed among the leaves and she is surrounded by a 3 D border detailrecreated from the Assyrian derived paterae found in Greek Sculpture.

•5,1cm Diameter x 4mm Thickness
•3D Side A, 3D Side B

Geocache Poem by DARKSIDEDAN
My endless search goes on and on
Looking for treasures of every kind
Always chasing just one more find
Putting past DNF’s out of my mind
I step out into the world outside,
Seeking what is hidden from me
What size, shape or form will it be?
Only time will tell, I can’t wait to see
Will I find my prize at the end?
I will search in the failing light and cold
Filling with despair having looked everywhere
Where is this thing that gives my life pleasure?
Looking all around from every angle
I read the logs and check the hint
I curse out loud as I walk in circles
Screaming the bloody thing it not there
As time flies by and I fail to see,
Never once stopping to realize
It always been there before my eyes
No need for sorrow, there’s the Geocache.
