About This Item

500th Find Geocoin

To celebrate my 500th find: GC34CPV - "Church Micro 4675...Crowle"

In West Midlands, United Kingdom
NE NE 3.8 mi from my home location

Geocache Description:

This was originally planned a long time ago but due to the publication of a nearby series it was put on the back burner. Sorry it has taken some time to come back to it.
The cache has been moved a short walk (or drive) away from the lchurch due to the proximity rules.

The cache itself is in the vicinity of, but not the grounds o,f the church and gardens but you need to visit the Church Porch to collect the information required to calculate the final coordinates .
Stealth will be required. The area is popular with Muggles and dog-walkers and is busy all year round.

If arriving by car please consider parking in the lane on the south side of the church (Bredicot lane) as it is impossible to turn in the lane leading to the church and this services only private access driveways.

The church is approached from the south though a short avenue of trees, and the first view is of the 14th century porch, carefully saved and re-assembled when the church was rebuilt in ABCD.
This fine example of medieval carpentry contains several interesting carvings of the period which are often un-noticed in the deep shadows.
Above the entrance arch is a weather-beaten plaque symbolising the annunciation, the base believed to be the crown of Kind David, surmounted by a vertical stem to signify the royal genealogy of Christ. On one side a female figure, now headless, on the other a winged figure.

On the panelled ceiling are two deeply carved foliate bosses, the central boss featuring a Plantagenet rose, on the east side of the ceiling, is the figure of a priest with arms outstretched, on the west, a male figure clutching a bunch of leaves, apparently sleeping.
The tiled roof is supported on three heavy kingpost trusses with braces which follow the curves of the stone arch over the entrance door to the church.

Final cache can be found at N52 11.(A+B)BD W002 07.DCA

Woohoo!! My 500th find!!

A better log will follow....

Edit: I carried out a search to find all the corrected coordinates I had for a trip to Hampshire, and found that this one had a set. I had no recollection of ever putting coords in and I knew for a fact that I'd not visited the graveyard. Odd. Looking at googlemaps, it was a legit set of coords and seeing as it was a beautiful day and I'd not found a cache that day I thought I'd give them a go and if it wasn't there, I wasn't that far from the church and could seek out the info I needed if the worst came to the worst.

I don't mind telling you that the coords I had were for a nearby copse/patch of woodland and I parked up in a lay by nearby and walked up through the woods. I was delighted to find that it was a bluebell wood and that it was in full flower - absolutely stunning. I was therefore far less upset when I reached the prospective GZ and had no luck finding a container.

I made my way back, taking a few photos and took the car up to the church to find the info, also finding a ache to tick off the day. I went home to do the maths and the new coords looked good and matched some previous logs. I decided that, seeing as it was a church Micro and a multi, that I would save it for my 500th find.

The day came, not too long after and I set off with mum to make the find. It was a fairly quick find at GZ and I was able to sign and pick up a TB. Also took some more photos, this time of the copse from the outside ;) Many thanks for the cache.
