To travel in celebration of Brunette Suikerbos's lifelong affair with LEGO...
LEGO was first created in 1932 in the workshop of Danish carpenter, Ole Kirk Christiansen. The first blocks were made of wood and in 1947 expanded into plastic. The company started to produce its now famous interlocking bricks in 1949.
The name LEGO had its origin as a self-made contraction from the Danish phrase leg godt, meaning “play well”. It was only later that the LEGO Group discovered that LEGO can be loosely interpreted as “I put together” or “I assemble” in Latin.
LEGO was voted Toy of the Century in 2000 by Fortune magazine as well as the British Toy Retailers Association, beating out such other classics as the teddy bear, Action Man and Barbie.
LEGO could also be considered the world’s No. 1 tire manufacturer; the factory produces about 306 million tiny rubber tires every year and in 2011 alone had moulded over 381 million tyres.
Approximately 19 billion LEGO elements are produced each year, 2.16 million bricks are moulded every hour, 36,000 every minute. More than 400 billion LEGO bricks have been produced since 1958. That amounts to about 62 LEGO bricks per person on earth, and if stacked, would reach the moon and back, ten times over.
