Gerhard Mercator (1512/03/05 - 1594/12/02 is remembered for the Mercator projection world map, which is named after him.
This proved very useful to many later navigators who could (using his map) sail across the entire ocean on approximately straight paths (called rhumb lines).

March 5th 2012 marks Gerhard Mercators 500th birthday. Inspired by this event initiated by Toni C. this wonderful Geocoin has been created.
On the front the potrait of Mercator is shown. The backside shows the celebrated Mercator projection od the worldmap. Different continents are represented through different colors,countries through different shadings.
