The Mercator Geocoin was designed by the geocacher technetium who minted the coin together with the Geocoinshop.

The idea of the geocoin was to honer Gerardus Mercator who was a cartographer, philosopher and mathematician. 2012 marked the 500th anniversary of Mercator's birth. Born on 5 March 1512 in Rupelmonde (Belgium) he would had been 500 Years old on the day the geocoin was released for purchase.

Gerardus Mercator is best known for his work in cartography, in particular the world map of 1569 based on a new projection which represented sailing courses of constant bearing as straight lines. He was also the first to use the term "atlas" for a collection of maps.

The Mercator Projection

The Mercator projection is a cylindrical map projection presented by the Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. It became the standard map projection for nautical purposes because of its ability to represent lines of constant course, known as rhumb lines or loxodromes, as straight segments that conserve the angles with the meridians. While the linear scale is equal in all directions around any point, thus preserving the angles and the shapes of small objects (which makes the projection conformal), the Mercator projection distorts the size of objects as the latitude increases from the Equator to the poles, where the scale becomes infinite. So, for example, landmasses such as Greenland and Antarctica appear much larger than they actually are relative to land masses near the equator, such as Central Africa.

So many beautiful coins, started to log them one by one but this collection is so impressive that I will watch them one by one but log them all at once from here... Met you on my Friday the 13th event (is there a coin for that? ;-), considering there is one for many special dates there will be one for sure somewhere) in Vlissingen the Netherlands... Long after the event was over we were still there together with Marsso talking about many stuff among which the Corona Virus but also our hobby Geocaching and then you offered to share your coin collection with us.. So honoured that you would show it to us, love to watch them all, some of them never seen before and others that look familiar... Stay Safe, Stay Healthy and hope to see you again somwhere someday after this Corona Crisis.. Bye for now.. Barbara team barbatante

laatst afgereisd naar het sake 2016 en daar caches gezocht , boomklim cursus en diverse bugs en coins gezien waaronder deze. wat een collectie ongelofelijk was sprakeloos daarom een mailtje naar de eigenaar en nu mag ik ze allen discoveren dank ervoor mooie grote vitrine kast vol .. super..! bedankt

Een paar weekenden geleden ben ik afgereist naar Krommenie om daar het Event Sake2016 te bezoeken. Het was een lange rit helemaal vanuit twente, maar hobby mag geld kosten toch? Het was een goed georganiseerd event, mijn complimenten daarvoor. Ook zag ik een groot vritine kast met wel een heleboel coins. Mijn god, dat hobby geld mag kosten dat kun je wel zien aan deze man die ze allemaal heft. Indrukwekkend gewoon. Ik ben niet zo van de coins sparen, maar gelukkig hebben andere mensen daar andere gedachten over. Ik heb werkelijk geen idee hoeveel het er waren, misschien wel een kleine 500 stuks. Ik ga dan ook deze mensen die al deze coins gespaart hebben dan ook hartelijk bedanken voor het uitstallen van hun collective. Gewoon TE GEK!

Geo-Dragonchild was op het SAKE2016 event aanwezig, waar hij een gedeelte van zijn verzameling heeft laten zien Wat een prachtige verzameling, waar iedereen jaloers van word. Ik heb genoten van de prachtige coings en ben onder de de indruk van de omvang van deze verzameling. Ik hoop ook de rest van je verzameling eens te zien. hartelijk bedankt deze te mogen loggen groeten opamol

Op het SAKE2016 waren diverse TB om gediscovered worden. Maar de mogelijkheid om deze beroemde geocaching Trackables te kunnen discoveren is natuurlijk andere koek. Vol bewondering heb ik ze bekeken. Wat een mooie collection van diverse Trackables bij elkaar. Heel veel dank en de unieke mogelijkheid om je verzamelingen te kunnen dicoveren. Geo-Dragonchild bedankt en natuurlijk ook de Extra TB van je geocaching vrienden.
