Challenges...

...hier muss ich doch direkt mal die Beschreibung editieren und den mehr als großartigen Log von *B'Elanna* einsetzen. Denn das, was ich zunächst über diese Coin dachte, war irgendwie verkehrt - richtig ist es so:

Ich denke, man muss hier unterscheiden zwischen "Groundspeak Challenges" und "Challenge-Geocaches".

Der Challenge-Geocache ist das, was wir heute kennen: eine ganz gewöhnliche Dose, gelistet als Mystery, aber meistens platziert an den Listingskoords, mit Logbuch, in das man sich eintragen darf, aber online loggen darf man erst, wenn man bestimmte Bedingungen erfüllt.

Worauf diese Coin hier aber anspielt, sind die "Challenges", etwas, was im August 2011 eingeführt wurde und keine eineinhalb Jahre überlebt hat: "Geh irgendwohin, tu irgendwas, und mach ein Foto davon." Keine Dose, kein Logbuch. Statt dessen Aufgaben wie "Mach ein Bild von Dir im Piratenkostüm auf einem Boot" oder sowas. Der Willkür der Premium-User (die als einzige Challenges starten durften, aber ohne jeden Review-Prozess), waren kaum Grenzen gesetzt. Mit Geocachen hatte das nicht mehr viel zu tun. Deshalb hat Groundspeak dann auch Ende 2012 die Notbremse gezogen und diese Form der ... hm ... Selbstdarstellung ersatzlos gestrichen. 
Pech für die, die neben den 123 Founds 2796 Completeds hatten.

Und eben diese Challenges hatten jenes Symbol, was heute die Coin ziert, als Icon, so wie der Fund einen Smiley als Icon hat.

Danke für's Erinnern an alte Zeiten - aber im Rückblick muss ich sagen, war es eine gute Entscheidung, diesen Unsinn zu beenden.

Edit: Danke für diese tolle Recherche - und ja, ich bin dabei, wenn es heißt dass DAS nichts mit Geocachen zu tun hat. Wobei das Icon für die Challenge-Geocaches mir dennoch gefallen würde!

I think you have to differentiate between "Groundspeak Challenges" and "Challenge-Geocaches".

The challenge geocache is what we know today: a very ordinary can, listed as a mystery, but mostly placed on the listing scores, with a logbook you can sign up to, but you can not log online until you meet certain conditions.

What this Coin alludes to is the "Challenges", something that was introduced in August 2011 and has not survived for a year and a half: "Go somewhere, do something and take a picture of it." No can, no logbook. Instead, tasks such as "Take a picture of you in pirate costume on a boat" or something. The arbitrariness of the premium users (who were allowed to start as only challenges, but without any review process), there were hardly any limits. It did not have much to do with geocaching. That's why Groundspeak pulled the emergency brake at the end of 2012 and deleted this form of ... hm ... self-presentation without substitution.
Bad luck for those who had 2796 completets in addition to the 123 founds.

And just these challenges had that symbol, which adorns the Coin today, as an icon, just as the Found has a smiley as an icon.

Thank you for remembering old times - but in retrospect I have to say it was a good decision to end this nonsense.

Edit: Thanks for this great research - and yes, I'm there when it says that this has nothing to do with geocaching. Although the icon for the challenge geocaches would still appeal to me!
