Hare Beware is a representative of an extremely rare species, the Seychelles Racing Tortoise, from a remote atoll in the Seychelles archipelago in the Indian Ocean, off the eastern coast of Africa. His scientific name, Geochelone volans, derives from local legends which refer to the reputed ability of this species to fly. Detailed scientific analysis of the anatomy and physiology of museum specimens does not confirm this myth, although evolutionary forces appear to have acted upon this species in such a way as to endow it with exceptional speed. If you happen to observe this specimen in flight, please document the event with photographs and post them in the log below. Please help him to win his race by keeping him moving!
