About This Item

Scotland Micro Flag Coin

To celebrate finding my first geocache in Scotland: GC16YYN - "Norton Garden"

In Southern Scotland, United Kingdom
N N 264 mi from your home location

Geocache Description:

Very easy path, suitable for all. Cachers are asked to park in the hotel conference centre car park, then you can walk past the hotel entrance and there is a path at the end of the lawm.

Norton Garden (No.1 of Norton caches if you are doing them in this order)

The cache is placed on private land. The owners are happy for people to walk their dogs or walk around but please park in the car park at the conference centre of Norton House. Please stick to the paths. There are often cattle kept in the fields. The road can be busy as well. The X48 Bus will get you here from Edinburgh.

You are in the Norton Estate garden. The gardens are kept up by the hotel. You may see a train going past while you are searching.

The Norton House Hotel was originally a private house that was built in 1838 by Alexander Berwick an Edinburgh Brewer. Alexander only lived in the house for 10 years and then the house was sold to the Usher family who were brewers and distillers, involved in VAT 69. The Usher family paid to have the Institute of Public Health building built on Warrender Park Road (now student flats). You can see a big notice carved in the stone on the outside of the building in Warrender Park. The Ushers also donated £100,000 to the building of the Usher Hall for the people of Edinburgh. John Usher became the first baronet of Norton and Wells in 1899 and the Baronetcy has been passed down through the generations

The last Usher of this family left in 1960 and the house was converted to a hotel, now privately owned and has recently had a lot of money spent on redevelopment.
