This is the 5th in a series of caches dedicated to remembering those places and institutions that are gone from the Houston scene. You need not get them all in order nor in one day. Take them at your leisure.
From 1960 to 1996, Houstonians spent most of their fall Sundays (and occasional Monday) watching their Houston Oilers. From the early AFL days to the Love Ya' Blue era to those final days, we all lived and died with our Oilers.
Then one day, the Oiler owner (who will remain nameless) decide he wasn't making enough money so he packed his bags and moved the Oilers to Tennessee. He even made sure that when Houston did get another team, they couldn't use the Oiler name (like the Cleveland Browns did). Even though we have a new team, since the Oilers are no more, it's like they are dead and live only in our distant memory. There has been a disconnection of the continuity. This is why I wanted to do this cache. I miss my Houston Oilers
The cache is located in view of the Dome where they played many an exciting game. If you were an Oiler fan, reflect back for a moment of those good old days. The container is small with a few trinkets. The prize for the FTF is an autographed Curley Culp football card.
I met Curly when we both took a computer class at U of H. There weren't enough computers for everyone so we had to double up. Since our names were next to each other on the class roster, we teamed up on one computer. Curley has a great since of humor.
This cache has one catch. You must name an Oiler player or head coach who hasn't yet been named or I will delete your entry. For example, I have named Curley Culp, so you must name another former Oiler player or head coach. I will occasionally print a list of those names taken, so you won't have to read through every log.
One bit of trivia: The Oiler logo was an oilfield worker in an Oiler jersey and a hard hat on his head. The jersey was #66. That was because the father of the Oiler owner was once a top executive with the Phillips Oil Company (as in Phillips 66).
