How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This is a multiple waypoint projection cache which will require you to go to several locations to gather information to find the final cache. All bearings are to magnetic north so set your GPSr accordingly before you start. I suggest if you are not familiar with bearings, waypoint projections, route setting, or creating waypoints in Mapview on your GPSr, practice before you start to avoid a lot of extra time and frustration. This can also be done with an accurate mapp although you’ll have to understand magnetic variation. Finally, you should have paper and pencil handy and a small pocket mirror might be useful as well. OK, ready?

Go to the coordinates listed above. This is Waypoint 1 . Nearby you will find two Mapps. The one on the left has two dates. Using the earlier date, take the third digit and divide this number by two. The result will be the number of miles to the next waypoint. (For example, if the date is 1932, you will take the number 3 and divide by 2 giving you 1.5 miles .) Now, take the middle two numbers, reverse them and multiply the result by the third digit. (The same example would give you 117.) This is the bearing to your next waypoint and clue.

You can park less than two tenths of a mile from Waypoint 2. At or near Waypoint 2, you will find a small white sign with black lettering. On the back of the sign are two red labels with numbers stamped on them. The smaller number is the bearing from Waypoint 2 to Waypoint 3. The larger number is the bearing from Waypoint 1 to Waypoint 3. Where the two bearing lines cross is the location of Waypoint 3. If you want an "easy" way to figure this out, now is the time to consult the hint.

Waypoint 3 is a microcache. Because of the slop and variation in projecting waypoints and picking the crossing point, here is some help: Waypoint 3 is at a prominent manmade object. It is within five feet of the big "R". You do not need to (and should not) climb where it says not to. Inside of the microcache are two red labels with the minutes portions of the final cache coordinates (assume N29 and W095 degrees.) The smaller number is for the west coordinate and the larger is for the north coordinate.

The final cache is a 1 gallon tupperware container with log book and a couple of trade items. The area gets pretty muddy and wet so be prepared…

Give yourself a couple of hours for this one. If you find anything wrong with the numbers or calculations or have any comments that might be spoilers, please e-mail me ASAP and I will check on it promptly. Any spoilers will be deleted immediately. Good luck, and lets be careful out there!
