At 3:18am EST on Tuesday, December 26,
2006 marked a significant milestone in the history of
geocaching.com. This marked the end of the 6-digit geocaching.com
waypoint ID. Contrary to popular belief, the end of the 6-digit
waypoint ID did not spell the end of geocaching as many had feared
and worried might happen. Although GCZZZZ should be the last cache
with a 6-digit waypoint ID, after almost 3 months it has never been
published, and is questionable if the id even exists at all. So
this cache GCZZZY is currently the cache with last active 6 digit
waypoint id.
When the question was asked a couple years ago, what happens
when we run out of 6-digit waypoint IDs, someone sarcastically said
"GAME OVER", and hence that was the inspiration of
this cache.
This geocache GCZZZY is the 512399 geocache
created on geocaching.com and it has taken just over 6.5 years
(2429 days) to reach this point, with an average of about 210
geocaches created each day since the first geocache was placed back
on May 3rd, 2000.
Now is your chance to be a part of history, by getting out and
finding this geocache GCZZZY, as this will
definitely be one of the most historic and significant moments in
geocaching.
Update (December 2008): Finally after almost 2
years, GCZZZZ has been published. GCZZZZ is owned by gipsie from
New Jersey, USA.
