Geocache Description:

I placed this cache to celebrate my Daughter in law’s final radiation treatment for breast cancer today. Over the last 7 months she has dealt with diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and finally radiation therapy. She has handled this crisis superbly and thankfully is doing very well. Update as of June 2018, Susan remains cancer free.

I have given this hike a terrain rating of 4.5 because of winter conditions, during summer a rating of 4.0 would be more appropriate. The round trip distance is 12.6 kms with an elevation gain of approximately 840 meters. The Cox Hill trail can be accessed from the Dawson Trailhead parking lot, located on the north end of Powderface trail (road). The portion of Powderface Trail from Sibbald Flats to the Dawson parking lot is maintained year round. Access to Powderface trail is from Hwy 68 at Sibbald flats. There is an excellent trail description in Vol 2 of Gillean Daffern’s Kananaskis trail guide (trail # 336). This is the first time I have done this hike in winter, usually Mrs BVPete and I hike it on July 1 to see the fabulous wildflower displays. No flowers to be seen today and the hike was much tougher, snowshoes and crampons (steep hardpack) would be helpful at the higher elevations. The ascent took me 2 hrs and 40 minutes and would have been longer if a previous hiker had not packed the trail with snowshoes. The entire trip took me 4.5 hours. However, the views from the top were as spectacular as always so I think I enjoyed it (now that I am home).

The cache is an ammo can containing a bunch of good swag as well as a FTF photo (taken during the summer), a FTF prize of a $10 book of Tim Horton gift certificates and a STF prize of $2. To find the cache turn right after breaking out into the main summit meadow and go about 110 paces down slope to ground zero (GPS accuracy was +/-5 meters). I placed it here for privacy, as there can be a lot of muggles on the meadows during summer.
