Genval-les-Eaux Multi-cache

A sa création en 1904, le Parc de « Genval-les-Eaux » fut bordé de bâtiments de prestige typiques des grandes stations balnéaires : des villas coquettes, agréablement compliquées au goût de l’époque, de larges perspectives s’ouvrant sur de jolies vues, le tout à deux pas du chemin de fer et à une demi-heure de Bruxelles. Aujourd’hui, le lac est toujours un site de promenade et de détente des plus agréables, y compris pour y pratiquer le géocaching en famille à la découverte d’un patrimoine exceptionnel. Created in 1904, the Park of “Genval-les-Eaux” was surrounded by prestigious buildings of the kind found in watering places : handsome villas, elaborately decorated in accordance with the taste of the times, and beautiful vistas opening up around them – all of this just a stone’s throw away from the train station and only about half an hour away from Brussels. Today the lake area is still a favourite place for walking and relaxation, including geocaching with your family on an exceptional historical site. Map and spoileravailable.

WP01 – Le Château du Lac (N50°43.759  E4°30.731)

Construite en 1907, “l’Etablissement des Eaux minérales” fut longtemps  une usine d’embouteillage.  Acquis en 1952 par la famille Martin, elle y produisit eaux et Schweppes jusqu'en 1981. Elle devint en 1985 l’hôtel « Château du Lac », seul 5 étoiles en Wallonie. L’équipe de France de football y résida lors de son victorieux Euro 2000.
Enigme n°1: un facétieux photographe a falsifié la photo du Château prise en 2006. Observez attentivement le « vrai » Château à partir du WP01, et comparez-le à la photo « truquée » ci-dessous à gauche. Associez à A le nombre de la case où un détail du bâtiment a été malicieusement modifié.

The “Etablissement des Eaux minérales” (Watering Establishment), built in 1907, was designed to serve as a water-bottling plant. Purchased by the Martin family in 1952, the plant was used to produce bottles of water and Schweppes until 1981. It became in 1985 the famous 5-star hotel “Château du Lac”. The french football team slept here during their victorious Euro 2000. Enigma n°1  : a facetious photographer has falsified the picture of the castle (2006). WP02 - La Laiterie et la Tour Marlborough (N50°43.788  E4°30.704)

Quatre des neuf bâtiments constituant le « Hameau du Petit Trianon » de Versailles sont reproduits à l’identique autour du Lac de Genval. La Tour de Marlborough est adossée à la « Laiterie ». Tous deux constituent aujourd’hui un restaurant chinois. Enigme n°2: En 2007, la tour a été abattue, il n'en reste plus que la base. Le resto s'appelle-t-il "Shanghai-sur-Lac" (B=1), "Le Shangri-La du Lac" (B=3) ou "Pekin-les-Eaux" (B=7) ?

Around the Lake of Genval, four of nine buildings were copied from le « Petit Trianon Hamlet » of Versailles. The Marlborough Tower and the Dairy (“Laiterie”), abutting on each other, practically constitute a single unit, now converted into a Chinese restaurant. The Tower itself disappeared in 2007. Only the base of the building remained. What is the name of the restaurant : "Shanghai-sur-Lac" (B=1), "Le Shangri-La du Lac" (B=3) or "Pekin-les-Eaux" (B=7) ? "

WP03 - La Ferme du Trianon (N50°43.742E4°30.713)

Le premier bâtiment de Genval construit à l’identique du hameau du Petit Trianon de Versailles fut la Ferme, en 1904. Elle fut initialement le centre du “Jardin Ornithologique”. Elle est devenue une propriété privée attenante au Musée de l’Eau et de la Fontaine.  Enigme n°3: Notre photographe déchaîné s’est à présent attaqué à la photo de la Ferme. The first building in Genval to be constructed as like the hamlet of le Petit Trianon de Versailles was the Farm, in 1904. It was initially the central hub for the “Ornithological Garden”. It became a private property, adjacent to the Water and Fountain Museum.  Enigma n°3  : Our irrespectuous photographer falsified the picture of the Farm. WP04 - Chalet Rütli / Le Trèfle à Quatre (N50°43.689  E4°30.810)

Ce surprenant bâtiment est la copie presque conforme du chalet du même nom qui borde le Lac des Quatre Cantons en Suisse, face … à la Chapelle Guillaume Tell. Le Rütli fut jadis un restaurant réputé, le « Trèfle à Quatre », apprécié de Léopold II. Il abrite aujourd’hui des bureaux où il n’est pas désagréable de travailler, vu sa situation exceptionnelle… Enigme n°4: Le photographe fou a cette fois décidé de relooker le Chalet. Associez à D le nombre de la case où un détail du bâtiment a été modifié.

This surprising swiss building was built on the hill, on the site of the original bottling plant and hence close to the springs. It is a copy of the “Chalet Rütli” (Four Cantons Lake, Switzerland), situated in front of … the William Tell chapel.  The chalet was a famous restaurant, “Le Trèfle à Quatre”, much appreciated by King Léopold II. It currently houses some pleasant offices.  Enigma n°4  : The mad photographer decided to relook the Chalet. WP05 – La Villa du Lac (N50°43.652  E4°30.988)

Admirez cette superbe et imposante "villa", jadis appelée "Villa Rossel". Enigme n°5: deux villas situées en face de la Villa du Lac (n°3 et 5 av des Merisiers) portent de fort jolis noms fleuris. Lequel de ceux-ci est faux : « Les Coquelicots » (E=5), « Les Œillets » (E=7) ou les « Bluets » (E=9) ?

Look at the beautiful and big "villa", initially called "Villa Rossel".  Enigma n°5  : two villas on the other side of the street (n°3 et 5 av des Merisiers) wear nice flower names. Which of these ones is wrong :« Les Coquelicots » (E =5), « Les Œillets » (E =7) or « Les Bluets » (E =9) ?

WP06 – Promenade Paul Harris (N50°43.759  E4°30.859)

C'est ici, à hauteur du Château du Lac, que débute votre promenade de 2km sur les berges du Lac de Genval. Enigme n°6: Que fonda Harris en 1905 ? Kiwanis (F=1), Rotary(F=3) ou Lions Club (F=5) ?

D’ici, nous apercevons distinctement la Chapelle Guillaume Tell de l’autre côté du lac. Une étrange fresque garnit ce pavillon joyeusement coloré par M.J.C. Rix en septembre 200G (Enigme n°7)

WP08 - Pavillon Japonais & Marcatchou (N50°43.656  E4°31.393)

Le café « Le Pavillon Japonais » est actuellement le restaurant « La Laguna ». Quant au “Marcatchou”, devenu « Les Pléiades » puis « Blanc-Mesnil » et enfin “Chalet Normand”, il bénéficie de son étang bien à lui. Il s’agit de la toute première piscine du Parc de Genval-les-Eaux, bassin de natation dont l’existence ne fut pas bien longue. Enigme n°8 : entre les deux bâtiments ci-dessus, sur la frontière entre Rixensart et Overijse (frontière linguistique entre Wallonie et Flandre qui coupe le lac en deux), se trouve l’antique mécanisme vert d’une petite écluse. La roue dentée de 10cm de diamètre comporte 1H dents.

The « Japanese Pavilion », once a café, became a restaurant, « La Laguna ». The “Marcatchou”, later called “The Pleiades”, “Blanc-Mesnil” and finally “Chalet Normand”, has a pond of its own. This originally was the first, albeit short-lived, swimming pool ever to be built in the Parc de Genval-les-Eaux.  Enigma n°8 : between the Japanese and Normandian buildings, on the border between Rixensart and Overijse (linguistic border between Wallonie and Vlaanderen which crosses the lake), you can find an old green mechanism of a small lock. ON the 10-cm diameter gear wheel you can count exactly 1H teeth.

WP09 - La Chapelle Guillaume Tell (N50°43.835  E4°31.041)

Cette réplique de la chapelle de Guillaume Tell (1904), dont l’original est lui aussi situé au bord du lac des Quatre Cantons, rappelle la légende du célèbre héros suisse. Enigme n°9: la Chapelle est à peine visible côté rue. Son entrée porte le numéro 1J6.

Facing Chalet Rütli, on the opposite bank of the lake and roughly in the same direction as its original model at the Lac des Quatre Cantons in Switzerland, a replica of the William Tell Chapel was built in 1904 and refers to the story a the famous swiss hero.  Enigma n°9  : the chapel is almost invisible from the street. Its entry wears number 1J 6.
